Palmares is the 7th Canton of Alajuela. In pre-Columbian times, the territory that currently corresponds to the Palmares canton was inhabited by indigenous people from the so-called Huetar Kingdom of the West, which at the beginning of the conquest was the domain of the chief Garavito. Testimony of this fact are in the stone and ceramic objects found mainly in the current Zaragoza and Esquipulas villas, as well as in the vestiges of an indigenous road that crossed the region from west to east, which was possibly the main communication route of the aborigines for Central Valley with those of the coasts. To the northeast of Palmares lies the Cerro del Espíritu Santo where there are ruins of a Catholic construction to Christ the King.
