Naranjo is the 6th canton of the Alajuela province in Costa Rica. It is located northwest of the city of Alajuela. It has an extension of 126.62 km² and is divided into 9 districts. It limits to the north with Zarcero, to the south with Atenas, to the east with Valverde Vega and Grecia, and to the west with San Ramón and Palmares. It was founded on July 24, 1867. Its Capital is the city of Naranjo. The origin of the canton’s name dates back to 1833 when the first colonizer who arrived in the region, Don Judas Tadeo Corrales Saénz, found some orange groves in the middle of the thick forest that covered the current Candelaria town, in the city of Naranjo; which is why he named the site Los Naranjos. In the course of time the name of this place was omitted from the article, and when the canton was created, it was assigned only the name of Naranjo. The Basilica of Nuestra Señora de las Piedades, located in the city of Naranjo, is considered the architectural jewel of the canton and has been declared a historical-architectural heritage of Costa Rica. Another outstanding building is the church of Bajo Corrales, dedicated to the Virgen de la Candelaria. To the west of Naranjo is the Cerro del Espíritu Santo, where ruins of a Catholic construction of Cristo Rey are found.
